The auto landscape is changing. Fortify your business now.
The new Vehicle Efficiency Standard, introduced in 2025, will see EVs disrupt the auto market – for both new and used vehicles. Navigate upcoming challenges and explore new opportunities with Glass’s today.
New Vehicle Efficiency Standard

Starting 1 January 2025, the New Vehicle Efficiency Standard (NVES) sets CO2 emissions targets for all new passenger and light-commercial vehicles sold in Australia. To avoid government-issued fines from 1 July 2025, manufacturers must meet these targets on average across their stock each year.
Manufacturers will need to make strategic decisions about which vehicles to produce, potentially eliminating certain models from their line up to meet NVES requirements. Financial penalties may also be passed onto consumers, which could increase the demand for used vehicles.
Car makers are still able to sell vehicles that don’t meet the NVES marks. They must, however, offset these sales with more efficient vehicles that beat the targets to achieve an interim emissions value below zero. Targets vary depending on vehicle type and size and will lower annually.
The NVES aligns Australia’s automotive market with the other 85% of vehicles sold across the world that are already regulated by a fuel efficiency standard. By expanding the availability of electric and hybrid vehicles, the NVES aims to decrease national CO2 emissions, working toward an eventual goal of net zero emissions by 2050.
With reliable data from Glass’s, you can make the right decisions for your business amidst the NVES rollout. Manage risks and increase your margins with real-time market data at your fingertips.
